How do I get referred

The Complications from Excess Weight clinic is for children and young people from 1 - 17.5 years who have serious health conditions caused by weight. The CEW at the QMC is for children who live within:

  • Nottingham/ Nottinghamshire
  • and patients usually seen in Derby, Burton, Boston and Lincoln hospitals.
(If you are unsure of your location please feel free to contact your GP to ask as it maybe there is another CEW clinic available to you elsewhere within England)

If you would like to be referred to the Complications from Excess Weight clinic there are several ways of doing this.  You need to obtain a referral from either:

  • Your GP/Doctor
  • A General or Community Paediatrician
  • Or from another clinical speciality (e.g. mental health services/CAMHS).

Referral to CEW is based on (i) the degree of obesity and (ii) presence of comorbidities. (Co-morbidities are the health problems related to weight which usually get better with weight management)

If you do not feel that you need CEW intervention but still wish for some help with your weight there is a newly established Nottingham and Nottinghamshire ‘Single Point of Access’ service for weight management services outside of CEW which would be able to direct you to the most appropriate service. Referrals to the service are via https://nottschildrenspoa.co.uk/ and can be completed by young people (over 16), parents/guardians or professionals.

Similar services exist in other areas; we can let you know about these if you do not live in the Nottinghamshire area.

In addition, adult obesity services now operate in most areas, open to referrals or self-referrals.
