First Appointment - What to Expect

Your first appointment will be with the Doctor alongside some other team members. (If you would prefer fewer people in the room, that is fine too, just let us know.)

Your first appointment will be at the QMC site of Nottingham University Hospitals. It is usually in Children's East Clinic Rooms. Please be on time.

During the appointment the Doctor will ask you lots of questions about your general health and wellbeing. Please feel free to bring any old clinic letters, results and any medicine you are taking with you.

You will be accompanied by your parent or carer so they can help answer those questions.

Your height, weight and blood pressure will be measured at the appointment.

The doctor will also do an examination and listen to your heart and chest.

We will discuss with you what the CEW clinic does, what is involved in being a patient attending the clinic, what is expected of you as a patient and our joint aims for your health.

Please feel free to bring a list of questions with you.  We are happy to answer them in clinic or at anytime throughout your time with CEW.

We will plan the next steps, which is usually a routine home visit from our Clinical Support Worker. We will also arrange a set of appointments with members of the team to start your journey.

After your first appointment you will receive several scheduled appointments spread out over the following weeks, which will include a dietician appointment, a Allied Health Professional appointment and an additional Doctor check up appointment.

Top Tips!

  • Please tell us before your appointment if you will need an interpreter.
  • Wear light and loose clothes. Tracksuits with loose t-shirts are good.
  • Set your alarm clock and get a good night sleep the night before you come. Please try and be on time.
  • Your initial appointment will be for about 1 hour. This is because we want to make sure we have all the right information so that we can support you and your family.
  • A doctor and nurse will examine your body including height, weight, waist circumference and blood pressure. We will look at your skin and check that growth and puberty are ok.
  • Blood tests may be recommended. This will be completed either by a nurse in clinic, or you will be brought to Phlebotomy for this. Please tell us if you need extra help with blood tests.
  • We may have sent you a questionnaire already. If so, we will collect it from you. We can help you fill in the form if needed. Find out your strengths and hobbies – we want to know what you’re good at and what you like to do.
  • We want to help you develop your skills, hobbies and interests to help you become healthier. Offer you the best treatments available.
